National Prosecutions Services (NPS)

The National Prosecutions Service (NPS) of Tanzania, known in Swahili as Ofisi ya Taifa ya Mashtaka, is the principal government body responsible for prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the state. Established under the National Prosecutions Service Act, 2008 (CAP. 430), the NPS operates independently under the leadership of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) .

Key Functions of the NPS


Prosecution Oversight: The NPS has the authority to initiate, conduct, and oversee criminal prosecutions in all courts, excluding military courts.


Investigation Coordination: It collaborates with investigative bodies like the police to ensure thorough and effective criminal investigations.


Legal Guidance: The service provides legal advice to investigative agencies and ensures that prosecutions are conducted in accordance with the law.


Public Interest Safeguarding: In its operations, the NPS emphasizes justice, the prevention of legal process abuse, and the protection of public interest.


Organizational Structure
The NPS is led by the Director of Public Prosecutions, currently Mr. Sylvester Anthony Mwakitalu. Supporting him is the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Bibiana Joseph Kileo. The organization comprises various divisions, including:



Division of Asset Forfeiture, Transnational and Specialized Crimes


Division of Fraud, Money Laundering, and Corruption


Division of Case Management and Investigation Coordination
