ICAP

Overview

ICAP (International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs) is part of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. It partners with governments and organizations worldwide to strengthen health systems and expand access to quality healthcare, especially in HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment.

ICAP in Tanzania

ICAP has been working in Tanzania since 2004 in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other national partners. Its goal is to support the country’s health system by providing technical assistance, capacity building, and implementation support across multiple health programs.

HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment Expands access to HIV testing, treatment, and support services across the country, improving retention and viral load suppression.
Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV Integration Integrates TB and HIV services for co-infected patients, ensuring early diagnosis and effective treatment.
Programs for Key Populations Reaches vulnerable and high-risk groups through targeted community programs, including voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC).
Cervical Cancer Screening Offers screening and treatment for women, especially those living with HIV.
Health Systems Strengthening Builds capacity in data management, laboratories, supply chains, and workforce development to improve overall healthcare delivery.
Surveys and Epidemiology Conducts national health surveys such as the Tanzania HIV Impact Survey (THIS) to generate data for policy and program planning.
COVID-19 Response Supported vaccination training, data reporting, and community education during the pandemic.
Major Projects

FIKIA and FIKIA+: Comprehensive HIV prevention and treatment projects that bring services directly to communities and health facilities across Tanzania.

PHIA Project: The Population-based HIV Impact Assessment that measures national HIV prevalence, incidence, and progress toward epidemic control.

Health Workforce and Data Strengthening Initiatives: Focused on digital health systems, training healthcare workers, and improving monitoring and evaluation systems.

Presence and Structure

ICAP Tanzania operates nationwide, with its main office in Dar es Salaam. It works in partnership with regional and district health authorities, local organizations, and communities. The organization is formally registered as a non-governmental entity in Tanzania and manages projects through systems like the ICAP Information System (IIS) and ICAP Operations Online (IOO).
